Howard & Mary D. Nelson Endowed Scholarship
Howard Nelson was a pharmacist and in 1937 was commissioned in the U.S. Army. Life in the service made traveling around the world possible; including Denver, St. Louis, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, and France.
In France, Howard’s wife, Mary D. Nelson, grew a love for the French language. She received a bachelor’s degree in French literature at George Washington University and taught high school French in Fairfax, Va.
She also received the diploma Superieur from the Sorbonne, Paris, and a master’s degree in foreign language methodology from Brigham Young University.
In 2002, the couple created the Howard & Mary D. Nelson Endowed Scholarship was established to benefit Utah Valley University students pursuing the study of French or participating in a French Study Abroad Program.
Mary D. Nelson passed away in 2010 and in lieu of flowers memorials, it was asked that donations be made to Mrs. Nelson’s foreign language scholarship fund at UVU.
